Baseball: Martin Henderson’s 7th Inning Stretch (5/20/15)

Wednesday was a light day in a busy week for Orange County baseball. There were only two games involving county teams participating in Divisions 2 and 4. D6 didn’t have an wildcard games. … In D4, Sunny Hills was all over Godinez, 12-2, beginning with five runs in the second inning and a fairly constant barrage thereafter. … Three pitchers limited the Grizzlies to just three hits. Starter Jeff James went the first four and left with a 9-2 lead. That will make you feel good sitting in the dugout. … James had at least three more reasons to smile: He had a three-run home run. … It wasn’t completely smooth sailing, though. James walked four and hit four batters. … He also struck out four. … It’s not going to get any easier for the Lancers, and I’m guessing the same number of free opportunities will come back to bite them in the first round Friday when they play at third-seeded Chino Don Lugo. …

The other game was equally one-sided. Colton defeated Century, 17-4. Matthew Rossano went five for five with five RBIs and scored two runs. One of those five hits was a grand slam. … Colton is going to be matched up against Laguna Beach in the first round. By the way, would you believe Colton has seven guys in NFL minicamps this spring and summer? If you read that article, be sure to read the last three paragraphs. It brings home why we celebrate Memorial Day. It’s a day of remembrance. Be sure to respect it. …

Laguna Beach set the county record this season for consecutive league victories. The Breakers can erase the section record next season if they win out. … It’s tough to win day in and day out, and it’s a fantastic accomplishment, but I have to believe it’s going to feel a bit hollow if it doesn’t translate into a couple of playoff victories. … The Breakers were beaten in the semifinals last season by Torrance, 4-3, in nine innings. Four days later, Torrance beat South Torrance, 11-0, in the championship. … Clearly, it matters which side of the bracket you’re on. …. Laguna Beach was 27-3 in 2014, 26-3 in 2013 (lost in the second round) and 18-9 in 2012 (lost in the first round after winning wild-card game). … Perhaps not coincidentally, the streak began after Mike Bair took over the program. It seems to be in good hands. … The last team to beat the team formerly known as the Artists was Calvary Chapel, 2-1, on April 27, 2012. Laguna Beach finished third with a 10-5 record, but won the last four in the Orange Coast League and haven’t looked back. … The previous record was set by the great Ron LaRuffa teams at Fountain Valley back in the 1990s. In fact, La Quinta won 45 in a row twice. … Laguna Beach won its 46th league game against Calvary Chapel, 8-5, behind big games from freshmen Blake Burzell, the pitcher, and Jeff Bruyntjens, the shortstop. That’s a good way to keep the streak alive. … But the streak nearly ended at 47. Calvary needed nine innings to score a 7-6 victory over Calvary; the Breakers scored three in the bottom of the inning after Calvary scored twice in the top of the ninth. … Bruyntjens had three RBIs and scored twice in that game, and Ashton Goddard, who went 7.2 innings, is a sophomore. … I wonder if they’d trade the record for a section title? I would. … Beginning tomorrow, they can have both. All they have to do is keep winning. …

Games involving local teams being played today: Division 1: Temecula Valley at JSerra, El Modena at Fountain Valley (maybe the game of the day), Millikan at Cypress, Murrieta Valley at Capistrano Valley, Dana Hills at Norco, Tustin at El Dorado, Long Beach Wilson at Aliso Niguel, Roosevelt at Huntington Beach, Edison at Agoura (I got a feeling about an upset in this one), Riverside North vs. Orange Lutheran at Hart Park (at 7 p.m.). … Division 3: Northwood at Mira Costa, Orange at Garden Grove, Segerstrom at Beckman, Rancho Alamitos at Corona del Mar, Lancaster vs. Ocean View at Angel Stadium (now that’s a playoff venue), … Division 5: Whittier Christian at Monrovia, La Puente at Capistrano Valley Christian, Saddleback Valley Christian at Hemet. …

Have you seen some of the latest photos on Terry Jack’s Twitter page? He has some awesome pictures of Huntington Beach. Man, I’m going to have to get me one of those Photoshops. …
