Boys Hoops: Redondo Union’s Williams Passes Way Too Soon (6/22/17)

These are the stories that are hard to write.

Redondo Union of Redondo Beach star guard Ryse Williams died Thursday morning of cancer, just a week after finding out that he had the illness and a day before his graduation.

Williams was 18 years old.

Williams led the Seahawks to a 26-7 overall record and a 10-0 Bay League record. He helped Redondo Union reach the CIF-SS Open Division consolation finals and the CIF So Cal Regional Division 1 quarterfinals. Williams helped the Seahawks reach the CIF So Cal Regional Finals in 2016, losing to Crespi of Encino in overtime.

Williams was planning on attending Loyola Marymount University on a basketball scholarship.

There will be a candlelight vigil tonight at 8 p.m. at the Dominguez Hills Village basketball courts in Carson.

Many of the top writers who covered and interviewed Williams during his career, including myself, as well as coaches and players took to Twitter to express their sadness for a kind young man with so much, who passed too soon.
