Football: Bennett’s 6 TDs Completes Perfect Season for Folsom (12/15/17)

Junior QB Kaiden Bennett showed why he is one of the top 2019 prospects in the state, accounting for six TDs to lead Folsom to a 49-42 victory over Helix of La Mesa in the CIF State Division 1-AA championship game on Friday night at Sacramento State.

The win gives the Bulldogs their third state title after also winning championships in 2010 and 2014. Bennett completed 21 of 33 passes for 326 yards, four TDs and two interceptions and 142 yards and two TDs on 17 carries for Folsom.

“(It feels) incredible,” Folsom coach Kris Richardson said. “Our guys did everything we asked. Twelve months of work to get to this, 16-0, incredible senior class, great young players, incredible coaching staff, we have families that support us, we’re proud to be a Folsom Bulldog and we’re so proud of our community. The way they support us — it’s hard to speak right now — but it’s an incredible feeling. It’s a great testament to our players and coaches.”

PIVOTAL MOMENT: With Folsom clinging to a 49-42 lead, junior Parker Clayton recovered an onside kick that helped the Bulldogs run out the final 65 seconds left on the clock to secure their third state title since 2010.

NOTES: Helix jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Folsom stormed back with 28 unanswered points to take a 28-14 lead into halftime. … Helix’s Robert Hunter Jr., a 6-3, 300-pound senior DL, picked off Bennett on the second play from scrimmage, setting up UC Davis-bound Carson Baker’s 3-yard shovel pass to Isaiah Wooden for a 7-0 lead with 9:59 left in the opening quarter. … Folsom turned it over on downs at Helix’s 27 on its next possession and the Baker connected with Wooden for a 73-yard TD pass on the next play from scrimmage for a 14-0 lead with 7:44 left in the first quarter. … The Bulldogs responded with a 70-yard TD pass from Bennett to Elijah Badger on the next play from scrimmage to make it 14-7 with 7:21 left in the opening quarter. … Bennett threw TD passes of 49 yards to Joe Ngata and 4 yards to CJ Hutton and added a 32-yard TD run to make it 28-14 at halftime. … Baker opened the second half with a 47-yard TD pass to San Diego State-bound Rashad Scott and the Scotties cut the lead to 28-21 with 10:23 left in the third quarter. … The Bulldogs responded with a 7-play, 74-yard drive. Bennett’s 28-yard run helped Folsom get a 2-yard TD run by Daniyel Ngata for a 35-21 lead with 8 minutes left in the third quarter. … Helix cut it to 35-28 on Baker’s 8-yard TD run with 15 seconds left in the third quarter. … Richardson made a gutsy call on Folsom’s ensuing drive when the Bulldogs decided to go for it from their own 25 on fourth-and-5. Bennett hit Joe Ngata for a 6-yard pass to convert on fourth down and eventually hit Hutton for a 54-yard TD pass to make it 42-28 with 10:09 remaining. … Helix came back with an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Baker’s 8-yard TD run to cut it to 42-35 with 6:16 left. … The Bulldogs responded with a 10-play, 71-yard drive that culminated with Bennett’s 1-yard TD run that gave Folsom a 49-35 lead with 2:47 left. … The Scotties went right down the field and scored on Baker’s 3-yard TD pass to Terrance McIntyre that made it 49-42. … But Clayton recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal Helix’s fate. … Baker completed 20 of 32 passes for 335 yards and four TDs with one interception for Helix, which also got 121 yards on 29 carries from sophomore Elelyon Noa. Wooden had eight catches for 173 yards and two TDs and Scott had seven receptions for 116 yards and a TD for the Scotties. … Joe Ngata finished with five catches for 96 yards and a TD, Badger had four receptions for 102 yards and a TD and Hutton had five catches for 89 yards and a TD for Folsom. … Helix was making its second appearance in the state finals after winning a Division II championship in 2011. …
