Girls Hoops: Ladycats Win State Title

Brea Olinda coach Jeff Sink said he wasn’t leaving Sacramento until his team won the state title. He can leave Sacramento.

The Ladycats came in determined and behind Arizona State-bound Reili Richardson they defeated Sacramento St. Francis, 64-51, in the CIF Division I State title game on Thursday at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

Richardson led the Ladycats (29-4) one more time with 26 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Tyiona Watkins added 22 points and sophomore Krislyn Marsh added 12 points and 12 boards for Brea Olinda, which led 31-12 at the half.

“We just had to play with passion and heart on the court,” Watkins said. “We showed no mercy.”

Tia Hay led the Troubadors with with 16 points and Lauren Craig added nine points and 13 rebounds for St. Francis (29-6), which trailed by as much as 23 points before cutting it down to 13 in the end.

This is the 19th state title for Sink and the Ladycats’ first since 2009.

“It an honor to come back here again,” Watkins said. “We are back here for two years in a row, but actually winning the whole thing. I’m just so proud of my team and especially Reili from helping us get this win.”
