Arizona State-bound Jazmine Hill helped So Cal Athletics-Richardson to a third-place finish in the PGF 18U Premier Nationals on Friday, then she became the first MVP of the PGF High School All-American game on Saturday evening at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, CA.

Hill, who had a spectacular career at Gahr High of Cerritos, turned a double play and caught a screaming liner at third base for some nifty glove work and she singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored a run to lead the West to a 6-3 victory over the East to seal her MVP honors. The West leads the all-time series over the East, 3-1. This was the first year an MVP award was given out.

“It was just a great experience, meeting all these new girls and coming together on the spot,” Hill said. “We just had to do what we do and that’s play softball and have fun while doing it.

“(On defense) I just knew I had to get my pitcher’s back and whatever comes to me, stop it and do what I can.”

UCLA-bound Lexi Sosa, who led Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista win a CIF-San Diego Section championship, had herself an oustanding Saturday, helping Athletics-Mercado/Smith beat Georgia Impact-Lewis, 1-0, to win the PGF 18U Premier national championship earlier in the day. She followed that up by starting for the West and pitching four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two to record the victory.

“it’s so amazing,” Sosa said. “I’m so blessed. I gotta put it all up to God. He was the whole reason this happened today. I’m thankful. I got work with my catcher (Alyssa Garcia from Mater Dei Catholic), who will also be at UCLA.”

The West struck for five runs in the top of the third. LSU-bound Ciara Briggs and UCLA-signee Alyssa Garcia singled and UCLA-bound Maya Brady reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases with out. Michigan-bound Chandler Dennis relieved Northwestern-bound Sydney Supple for the East and promptly walked in two runs, Brady scored from third on a passed ball and LSU-bound Raeleen Gutierrez added a two-run single to make it 5-0.

The East picked up three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. Alabama-bound Jenna Johnson singled and Northwestern-bound Angela Zedak walked before Arizona-bound Isabella Dayton grounded to third with two outs. The third baseman overthrew first and down the right-field line, allowing Johnson, Zedak and Dayton to score runs.

Hill added an RBI single in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring for the West.
