Johnny Rodriguez has been named the head coach of the boys’ lacrosse program at Mater Dei High School, school administration announced Friday. Rodriguez was most recently the head coach at Trabuco High School over the past two seasons.

“Johnny loves the sport and wants to contribute to its continued growth on the west coast,” said Phil Billomo, Mater Dei’s athletic director. “We believe the success Johnny has had in his young coaching career, as well as his many experiences and achievements as a player, will translate most favorably to our boys’ lacrosse program.”

Rodriguez looks forward to being at Mater Dei.

“A product of catholic education, I am very excited to be at Mater Dei High School and start working with the lacrosse program,” Rodriguez said. “I believe that with passion comes hard work and with hard work success is inevitable, and I look forward to bringing passion to the program. I am truly blessed to be able to do what I love for a living.”

While at Trabuco Hills, Rodriguez led the 2014 Mustangs to their first ever playoff appearance and in 2015, they won their first ever home playoff game and advanced to the quarterfinals. Rodriguez received 2015 South Coast League Coach of the Year honors. As a player, Rodriguez played lacrosse at Salisbury University, where he was a two-time All American, National Goalie of the Year (2011) and the captain of the 2011 National Championship Team. Currently, Coach Rodriguez is a member of the Major League Lacrosse for the Denver Outlaws and the founder of Buku Lacrosse Club.
