Softball: So Cal Roundup (3/20/18) Velazquez Powers Pirates


The So Cal Roundup for Tuesday, March 20.


San Pedro 5-6, Palos Verdes 4-5: Briana Velazquez hit the game-winning homer in the top of the eighth in the first game and she hit a walk-off two-run bomb in the second game to give the Pirates, the defending CIF-LACS Division I champion, the doubleheader sweep over the Sea Kings.


In the Redlands Invitational:


Vista Murrieta 8, Apple Valley 0: The Broncos, ranked No. 9 in the IE, took care of the Sun Devils.

Upland 6, Colton 0: Brooke Hatfield and Sarah Haendiges combined on a two-hit shutout and Bethune Cookman-bound Tyani Lowe went 1 for 3 with two RBI for the Scots, ranked No. 16 in the IE.

Santiago of Corona 10, Grand Terrace 2: Oregon-commit Hanna Delgado had a two-run double, UCLA-commit Stella Bennett went 3 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI, Florida-bound Brittany Allen went 2 for 3 with a run, Princeton-bound Madison Hamilton went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI, Merissa Borkowski went 2 for 3 with a run and the Sharks, ranked No. 2 in the IE and No. 7 in So Cal, used a seven-run rally in the top of the third to blow out the Titans, ranked No. 11 in the IE.

Chino Hills 9, Beaumont 5: DePaul-commit Brooke Johnson went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBI and freshman Payton Kelly went 2 for 4 with a double, a triple, a run and two RBI to lead the Huskies, ranked No. 8 in the IE, past the Cougars, ranked No. 20 in the IE.

Upland 4, Vista Murrieta 3: Tori Leonardo scored ona walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth to give the Scots, ranked No. 16 in the IE, the win over the Broncos, ranked No. 9 in the IE.

Chino Hills 10, Grand Terrace 2: The Huskies got a big boost from its freshmen as Kendall Mangel threw a four-hitter, Mykenzie Hanna hit a three-run homer and Kayla Chavez went 3 for 4 to lead the Huskies over the Titans.

Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista 5, Patrick Henry of San Diego 4: UCLA-commit Lexi Sosa went 2 for 3 with a double and Enissa Weakley worked three innings to get her first save as the Crusaders, ranked No. 5 in San Diego, defeated the Patriots.


In the North County Tournament:


San Marcos 11, Rancho Bernardo of San Diego 1: Sidney Adame, Maddie Helms, Utah State-bound Lexi Orozco and Notre Dame-bound Payton Tidd all homered as the Knights, ranked No. 1 in San Diego and No. 6 in So Cal, knocked off the Broncos, ranked No. 14 in San Diego.

Mt. Carmel of San Diego 11, El Camino of Oceanside 1: Winning pitcher Mara Miranda went 2 for 4 with a homer, Taylor McDermott went 2 for 3 with a double, a run and three RBI and JoJo Hebro went 2 for 3 with a run and three RBI for the Sundevils, ranked No. 18 in San Diego.

Carlsbad 6, Westview of San Diego 5: Laurel Moody drove in Marisa Hensch with a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the eighth to give the Lancers, ranked No. 8 in San Diego, the victory over Wolverines.


In the Jaguar Classic:


La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad 6, Ramona 3: Cassidy Romano hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth and the Mavericks scored two runs in the top of the seventh to pull out the victory over the Bulldogs, ranked No. 9 in San Diego.

San Pasqual of Escondido 9, Christian of El Cajon 3: Lauren Maggio went 2 for 4 with a run and three RBI, Olivia Burroughs went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBI and Racquel Moore went 3 for 4 with a double, three runs and two RBI as the Eagles knocked off the Patriots, ranked No. 19 in San Diego.

Sunny Hills of Fullerton 5, Irvine 1: Tennessee Chattanooga-bound Mariah Ramirez allowed three hits, no earned runs and struck out four to lead the Lancers, ranked No. 17 in the OC.
