Softball: So Cal Roundup (4/17/18) JSerra Stone Cold Stunners Mater Dei


The So Cal Roundup for Tuesday, April 17.


JSerra of San Juan Capistrano delivered the “Stone Cold Stunner” of the week by pulling off a 5-3 upset over Mater Dei of Santa Ana, ranked No. 3 in the OC and No. 8 in So Cal by So Cal Sidelines, in a Trinity League game on Tuesday at Thornton Park in Santa Ana.

The Lions improved to 10-9 overall and 2-1 in league after beating the Monarchs (16-5, 1-1) for the first time since 2008.

“This is a great win for the team, because it puts us back at. 500 and really sets the tone for the remainder of the season,” JSerra coach Krysten Pushckor said. “We are a team that competes at a high level and we’ve proven that so far this season. With a win like this, our confidence in the circle and at the plate continues to increase and gives us the momentum we need to go into the rest of our league games and finish off the season strong. I’m very proud of all the girls’ hard work and continued support of one another.”

Kate Harms went 2 for 3, Danni Darrow tripled and drove in two runs, Ali Steinker tripled and drove in a run and sophomore Sarah Shaw went 1 for 3 with an RBI and got the complete game win for the Lions.

“Historically, JSerra has struggled in league, but this team has changed history by winning two out of their last three league games,” Pushckor said. “That’s the goal of this team to change history and to win games. I think this season and these league wins have built the foundation for this team to be very successful in the remainder of the season and in the future of the program.”


In the Academy League:


Crean Lutheran of Irvine 7, Calvary Chapel of Downey 1: Anna Bjorklund pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts, Alexis Ocana went 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBI and Alexis White went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI as the Saints (12-7, 3-1) knocked off the Grizzlies (5-10, 3-2).


In the Avocado-East North County League


San Marcos 12, El Camino of Oceanside 0: Arizona State-commit Cydney Sanders went 3 for 3 with a run and two RBI and Notre Dame-bound Payton Tidd doubled and drove in two runs for the Knights (16-2, 3-0), ranked No. 2 in San Diego and No. 6 in So Cal.

Rancho Buena Vista of Vista 6, Oceanside 2: Umass Amherst-bound Dani Ellis went 2 for 3 with two RBI and Arizona-commit Paige Dimler went 2 for 4 with two runs to help the Longhorns (10-6, 2-0), ranked No. 11 in San Diego, beat the Pirates (2-9-1, 0-3).

Vista 6, Mission Hills of San Marcos 4: The Panthers (6-12, 1-2) upset the Grizzlies (13-7, 1-2), ranked No. 6 in San Diego.


In the Crestview League:


Yorba Linda 12, El Modena of Orange 0: UT Arlington-bound Allie Gardiner pitched a two-hitter with no walks and 12 strikeouts in five innings and Kellie Grady went 3 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Mustangs (10-5, 1-0), ranked No. 13 in the OC.

Foothill of Santa Ana 11, Canyon of Anaheim 1: Justine Boyle went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a run and three RBI for the Knights (8-12, 1-0).


In the Del Rio League:

Valencia of Placentia 20, Western 0: Christina Hurtado went 4 for 4 with three runsand four RBI, Lauren Kwak went 3 for 5 with a double, three runs and three RBI and Olivia Nunez went 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI for the Tigers (8-11, 3-0), ranked No. 18 in the OC.

Kennedy of La Palma 5, Cypress 4: Khloe Lilavois and Makenna O’Toole each had a two-run single and Melissa Torrez had an RBI single during a five-run rally in the top of the fourth and the Fighting Irish (11-5, 3-0), ranked No. 17 in the OC, held on for the victory over the Centurions (13-8, 1-2), ranked No. 11 in the OC.


In the Foothill League:


Golden Valley of Santa Clarita 2, Canyon of Canyon Country 0

Valencia of Magic Mountain 3, Saugus 0: Fairleigh Dickinson-bound Amarys Miller-Godsey belted a two-run shot and Texas-bound Shea O’Leary pitched a one-hit shutout with no walks and 12 strikeouts as the Vikings (16-7, 3-0), ranked No. 4 in LA and No. 15 in So Cal, beat the Centurions (12-6, 1-2), ranked No. 16 in LA.

Sunny Hills of Fullerton 6, Troy of Fullerton 1: Isabel Pena homered and Tennessee Chattanooga-bound Mariah Ramirez threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and doubled and drove in two runs to lift the Lancers (17-3, 3-0), ranked No. 6 in the OC and No. 20 in So Cal.

Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth 5, Paraclete of Lancaster 4: Penn-commit Sarah Schneider went 2 for 3 with a homer and Jessica Fitzwilliams drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the bottom of the fifth to help the Trailblazers (7-4, 5-1) take down the Spirits (13-3-1, 6-1).


In the Hacienda League:


Los Altos of Hacienda Heights 2, Charter Oak of Covina 0: Ole Miss-bound Savannah Diederich threw a four-hit shutout with one walk and 10 strikeouts for the Conquerors (19-2, 3-0), ranked No. 2 in LA and No. 7 in So Cal.


In the Imperial Valley League:


Central of El Centro 8, Brawley 2: Janyssa Martin went 3 for 4 with a double, a homer, two runs and two RBI to help the Spartans (13-6, 6-0) knock off the Wildcats (14-7, 4-2), ranked No. 15 in San Diego.

Southwest of El Centro 13, Palo Verde Valley of Blythe 0: Sadriena Rodriguez tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts in five innings, Adriana Molina went 2 for 4 with a double, a run and three RBI and Madeline Jungers went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and two RBI for the Eagles (17-5, 5-1), ranked No. 19 in San Diego.

Banning of Wilmington 10, San Pedro 5: Boise State-commit Angelina Devoe went 2 for 4 with a double, a homer and two RBI and she got the complete game win and Gladys Garcia went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI as the Pilots (16-5, 5-0), ranked No. 18 in LA, avenged last year’s loss to the Pirates (13-13-1, 3-2) in the CIF-LACS Division I title game.

Carson 18, Gardena 0: Leilani Pulemau tripled and drove in three runs, Natalia Davila went 2 for 4 with a run and three RBI and Paulina De La Torre went 2 for 2 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI for the Colts (15-7, 4-0).


In the Marmonte League:


Thousand Oaks 2, Agoura 1: Savannah Graham went 1 for 2 with a double, a run and an RBI and Jessica Torosian went 1 for 3 with an RBI to help the Lancers (6-7, 1-2) beat the Chargers (9-10-1, 0-3), ranked No. 20 in LA.

Newbury Park 3, Westlake of Westlake Village 0: Cori Carrillo threw a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts, Chase Knapp went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBI and Kali Brown went 2 for 2 with a run for the Panthers (12-2, 2-1), ranked No. 12 in LA.

In the Metro Mesa League:


Olympian of Chula Vista 2, Eastlake of Chula Vista 1: Utah-bound Sydney Sandez allowed no earned runs, four hits and struck out six to help the Eagles (11-8, 2-1), ranked No. 5 in San Diego, upset the Titans (11-6-1, 1-2), ranked No. 20 in San Diego.

Bonita Vista of Chula Vista 14, Otay Ranch of Chula Vista 3: Oregon-committed freshman Micaela “Lala” Macario went 2 for 5 with two triples, two runs and five RBI to lift the Barons (9-5-2, 3-0), ranked No. 17 in San Diego, over the Mustangs (7-9-1, 0-3).

Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista 14, Hilltop of Chula Vista 2: UCLA-commit Lexi Sosa connected on a three-run blast and Alyssa Graham added a solo shot for the Crusaders (11-7, 2-1), ranked No. 4 in San Diego.


In the Mountain Pass League:


Beaumont 7, West Valley of Hemet 1: Aubrey Slider and Alyssa Gonzalez drove in two runs apiece and Mahkenzy Lewis went 3 for 4 with a triple and a run for the Cougars (12-7, 3-0), ranked No. 18 in the IE.


In the Mt. Baldy League:


Don Lugo of Chino 4, Colony of Ontario 0: The Conquistadores (11-5, 6-2), ranked No. 20 in the IE, scored four runs in the top of the eighth and Crystal Amaral threw a four-hitter with 17 strikeouts to get the complete game win.

In the North Hills League:


Esperanza of Anaheim 9, Brea Olinda 0: San Jose State-bound Chrys Hildebrand and freshman Emily Gomez combined on the shutout and Sophia Tricoli smashed a three-run bomb to lift the Aztecs (14-4, 1-0), ranked No. 5 in the OC and No. 1 2in So Cal.

Villa Park 5, El Dorado of Placentia 3: North Dakota-bound Emily Rosas struck out eight to get the complete game win and went 2 for 2 with two RBI, Makenna Mitchell homered and Samantha Simmons went 2 for 3 with two runs for the Spartans (10-13, 1-1).


In the Pacific League:


Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta 27, Hoover of Glendale 0: Freshman Dee Dee Hernandez struck out 12 of the 15 batters she faced to record a five-inning perfect game for the Falcons (18-1, 7-0), ranked No. 7 in LA and No. 19 in So Cal.

“This was a team victory,” Hernandez said. “I felt my teammates were going to score the runs we needed to win and that took a lot of pressure off me and helped give me confidence on the mound. I trust my teammates and they trust me.”


In the Palomar North County League:


Mt. Carmel of San Diego 14, Del Norte of San Diego 4: Mara Miranda went 4 for 5 with a double, three runs and an RBI, Ally Troche went 3 for 3 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI, Taylor McDermott went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBI, Lauren Anderson went 3 for 5 with a run and four RBI and Antoinette Robinson went 2 for 5 with three RBI to lead a 22-hit attack by the Sundevils (13-3, 2-1), ranked No. 9 in San Diego.

Poway 11, Mission Vista of Oceanside 3: Stanford-commit Sydney Steele went 3 for 4 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI, Hawaii-bound Taylor Riley went 2 for 4 with a triple, two runs and three RBI and UCLA-bound Colleen Sullivan went 4 for 4 with a double, her 11th home run and five RBI for the Titans (15-3-1, 3-0), ranked No. 3 in San Diego.

In the Rio Hondo League:


Temple City 5, San Marino 2: Elliana Zellien and Amber Arreola hit back-to-back homers to lift the Rams (10-5, 4-1).


In the San Andreas League:

In the South Coast League:


Laguna Hills 17, Capistrano Valley of Mission Viejo 2: Teah Thies went 2 for 6 with a double, a run and three RBI and Jacci Crowe, Taylor Ward and Tanna Schweitzer had three hits apiece for the Hawks (9-6, 1-2), ranked No. 20 in the OC.


In the Southwestern League:


Murrieta Mesa 8, Vista Murrieta 0: LSU-commit Presleigh Pilon went 3 for 4 with a homer, two runs and three RBI, Idaho State-bound Autumn Pease doubled and drove in three runs and tossed a one-hitter with four strikeouts as the Rams (15-6, 3-0), ranked No. 3 in the IE and no. 13 in So Cal, defeated the Broncos (11-9, 1-2), ranked No. 1 2in the IE.

Great Oak of Temecula 8, Temecula Valley 2: New Mexico State-commit Mata Faapito went 2 for 3 with two homers and five RBI to power the Wolfpack (15-3, 3-0), ranked No. 4 in the IE and No. 14 in So Cal.


In the Suburban League:


Cerritos 8, La Mirada 7: Essense Gibbs’ pop up to second was misplayed, allowing Lauren Lejano to score in the bottom of the seventh and give the Dons (12-4, 6-0), ranked No. 17 in LA, the walk-off win over the Matadores (13-9, 4-2), ranked No. 19 in LA, and sole possession of first place in league. Gibbs finished 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI.

Mayfair of Lakewood 10, Artesia of Lakewood 1: Haylee Ridge had two doubles and Sarah Clausen homered to power the Monsoons (13-4, 5-1).


In the Sunset League:


Los Alamitos 3, Huntington Beach 2: Utah-commit Aliya Belarde’s grounder to short was misplayed, allowing freshman pinch runner Erin Mendoza to score from second with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and the Griffins (20-1, 4-0), ranked No. 2 in the OC and No. 5 in So Cal, pulled out the victory over the Oilers (12-6, 3-1), ranked No. 4 in the OC and No. 11 in So Cal.

Michigan State-bound Sarah Ladd pitched a complete game six-hitter, allowing one earned run, four walks and striking out five and freshman Sophia Nugent went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI for Los Al.

“We knew going into this that this was going to be a close game and with Sarah Ladd pitching we had to have her back and execute at the plate,” said Belarde, who went 2 for 4 with a run. “It was a whole team effort.”

Edison of Huntington Beach 13, Fountain Valley 0: Iowa State-bound Jayden McKeague hit a grand slam in the victory for the Chargers (11-6, 3-1), ranked No. 16 in the OC.


In the Trinity League:


Orange Lutheran 22, Rosary Academy of Fullerton 2: Mercer-commit Sarah Taylor homered and drove in three runs and Siena College-commit Jaeden Barajas went 4 for 4 with a double, a homer and two RBI for the Lancers (21-2, 2-0), ranked No. 1 in the OC and No. 2 in So Cal.


In the Valley Mission League:

In the West Valley League:


El Camino Real of Woodland Hills 14, Granada Hills Charter 1: Jordyn Vanhook went 3 for 4 with two homers and two RBI, Jillian Kelly went 2 for 5 with a double and five RBI and Ashley Murphy got the complete game win with eight strikeouts to lead the Conquistadores (9-10, 4-1) past the Highlanders (10-10-1, 3-3).


In nonleague games:


University City of San Diego 3, High Tech of San Diego 2: Daisy Letter drove in Erin Gillum with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Centurions (12-7) the walk-off win over the Storm (4-8).

North Torrance 3-3, Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach 2-9: Winning pitcher Kai Sawai delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Saxons (15-9) the win over the Mustangs (11-9-1) in Game 1. Washington University St. Louis-bound Katie Gould went 3 for 5 with a double and two runs, NYU-bound Serena Ponciano went 2 for 5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI and Angel Santellan went 2 for 5 with a double, a run and two RBI as Mira Costa picked up the win in Game 2.

Grossmont of El Cajon 13, Point Loma of San Diego 3: Jordan Brown went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple, two runs and seven RBI for the Foothillers (15-7), ranked No. 16 in San Diego.
