Softball: So Cal Roundup (4/2/18) Monarchs Outslug Chargers at Dugard Classic

The So Cal Roundup for Monday, April 2.


Mater Dei of Santa Ana and Edison of Huntington Beach combined for 24 hits, but it was the Monarchs outslugging the Chargers for an 11-6 victory in the Gold Bracket quarterfinals of the Alan Dugard Classic on Monday at Bill barber Park in Irvine.

Virginia-bound Donna Friedman connected on a three-run bomb, UCLA-bound Kelli Godin went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, Tennessee-commit Nyomi Jones went 2 for 4 with two runs, Notre Dame-bound Emma Clark went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI and Jackie Gonzalez went 2 for 2 with a double, a triple and two RBI to power the 12-hit attack by the Monarchs (14-3), ranked No. 3 in the OC and No. 5 in So Cal.

“Our hitting seems to be coming along and it was another team win,” Friedman said, “but there are still improvements we need to make defensively.”

Hailie Benko went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBI, Emma Mendoza went 3 for 3 with a run and Bella Espinoza and NYU-bound Alex Loomis had two hits apiece in the 12-hit attack by the Chargers (8-4), ranked No. 20 in the OC.

Mater Dei faces King of Riverside in the semifinals on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. and Los Altos of Hacienda Heights takes on Marina of Huntington Beach in the other semifinal on Saturday at 3 p.m. The winners meet for the Gold Bracket championship at 5:15 p.m.

Los Altos of Hacienda Heights 6, Woodbridge of Irvine 2: Jocylyn Vidal went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, Sacred Heart-bound Brianna Santos went 2 for 3 with a double and a run and Ole Miss-bound Savannah Diederich pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lift the Conquerors (14-2), ranked No. 3 in LA and No. 14 in So Cal, in a Gold Bracket quarterfinal.

Marina of Huntington Beach 7, El Dorado of Placentia 1: Emily Rush pitched a three-hitter two strikeouts to get the complete game win and went 1 for 2 with an RBI, Brianna Gonzalez went 2 for 2 with two RBI and Cal State Northridge-commit Shayla Thomas went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Vikings (8-5), ranked No. 11 in the OC, in the Gold Bracket quarterfinals.

King of Riverside 7, Fountain Valley 1: Amiyah Aponte picked up the complete game win and Arkansas-bound Larissa Cesena homered and Alayna Betancur tripled for the Wolves (12-3), ranked No. 7 in the IE, in a Gold Bracket quarterfinal.

Irvine 4, Northwood of Irvine 3: Sarah Harker, who went 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI, got hit by a pitch with bases loaded to force in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Vaqueros (5-8) the walk-off win over the Timberwolves (3-13) in the Silver Bracket.

Brea Olinda 6, St. Joseph of Lakewood 3

Tesoro of Rancho Santa Margarita 3, Silverado of Victorville 1: Makayla Norwood pitched an eight-hitter with three walks and two strikeouts for the Titans (7-10) in the Silver Bracket.

Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates 6, El Modena of Orange 3: Washington University-St. Louis-bound Madison Denton pitched a five-hitter with two strikeouts to get the complete game win for the Panthers (5-9) in the Silver Bracket.

Hart of Newhall 7, Burbank 1


In the Citrus Belt League:


Redlands East Valley 7, Yucaipa 0: Eve Harvey homered and pitched a five-hit shutout with no walks and four strikeouts and Shelby Arbeiter went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI as the Wildcats (11-5, 4-0), ranked No. 11 in the IE, shut down the Thunderbirds (8-6, 2-2), ranked No. 8 in the IE.


In nonleague games:


Beaumont 10, Kaiser of Fontana 0: Aubrey Slider went 3 for 4 with a homer and six RBI and Katelyn Shepard tossed a one-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts in five innings to lead the Cougars (6-7), ranked No. 19 in the IE.

La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad 5, Oceanside 1: Desiree Dufek went 2 for 3 with a homer, two runs and three RBI for the Mavericks (6-6), ranked No. 20 in San Diego.


In the Falcon Fiesta Tournament:


Olympian of Chula Vista 10, San Dieguito Academy of Encinitas 0: Reina Serrano and Utah-bound Sydney Sandez combined on a four-hit shutout and Cal State Dominguez Hills-bound Breeanna Simmons went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBI for the Eagles (8-7).

Rancho Bernardo of San Diego 8, Point Loma of San Diego 3: Taylor Harrison went 2 for 4 with a homer, three runs and three RBI, Heather Menzer hit a solo homer and Christina Sugimoto went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI for the Broncos (5-5), ranked No. 19 in San Diego.


In the Jaguar Classic:


Del Norte of San Diego 5, San Pasqual of Escondido 2: Olivia Oppeltz hit a two-run home run and Sophia Bertucci went 3 for 3 with a double, a run and an RBI for the Nighthawks (6-7).
