Softball: So Cal Roundup (4/20/18) Mater Dei Bounces Back With Super-Sized Win

After a shocking loss to JSerra of San Juan Capistrano earlier this week, Mater Dei of Santa Ana bounced back with a 9-8 upset over Orange Lutheran in a 10-inning Trinity League thriller on Friday at Thornton Park.

“The win over OLu today was definitely a team win,” said Mater Dei pitcher Mackensie Kohl, a Ohio University signee. “It took every person on our roster to come out with the victory. Losing to JSerra was definitely a huge turning point for us. We learned from our errors in that game and put everything into our practices Wednesday and Thursday.”

The Monarchs blew a four-run lead, but Sabrina Rivera drove in Notre Dame-bound Emma Clark with a single in the bottom of the sixth to tie it, 8-8.

USD-bound Amanda Valle’s grounder to first base, allowing Jackie Gonzalez to score the winning run for the walk-off win the bottom of the 10th.

Mercer-commit Sarah Taylor and Kentucky-commit Victoria Fragoso had RBI singles and the Lancers also picked up an unearned run to stake OLu to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Monarchs fired back by sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs for a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the first.

The Lancers chipped away at the lead before scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead after bases-loaded walk to Dartmouth-bound Kira La Scola and back-to-back sacrifice flies by Taylor and Taylor Holcroft.

Rivera tied it in the bottom of the seventh and Kohl turned in a gutsy effort, going the distance and allowing 13 hits, four earned run, four walks and striking out 10 in 10 innings to get the complete game win for Mater Dei (17-5, 2-1), ranked No. 3 in the OC and No. 8 in So Cal by So Cal Sidelines.

Tennessee-commit Nyomi Jones went 4 for 6 with a stolen base, Rivera went 2 for 5 with three RBI, Arkansas-commit Marlene Friedman went 1 for 5 with a run and an RBI, Michigan State-commit Erica Holt went 2 for 4 with a run and Hanna Jacobsen went 3 for 5 with a double and a run for Mater Dei.

“Moving forward, we will treat every team like they are the best in the country,” Kohl said. “We have a team with a lot of passion whose goal is to win for each other.”

Grand Canyon-bound Gianna Nicoletti went 2 for 6 with a run, LSU-commit Ciara Briggs went 3 for 4 with two runs, Ohio State-commit Mya Rodriguez went 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI, La Scola went 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI and Fragoso went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI for OLu (21-3, 2-1), ranked No. 1 in the OC and No. 2 in So Cal.

Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran and Santa Margarita are now in a three-way tie for first place in the Trinity League.

Palos Verdes 3, Redondo Union 1: Rachel Allen belted her seventh homer of the season and Addy Kostrencich picked up the win for the Sea Kings (7-8, 2-1).


In the Big VIII League:


Norco 9, Roosevelt of Eastvale 2: Ole Miss-commit Paige Smith went 3 for 4 with two homers and four RBI and Oklahoma-commit Kinzie Hansen went 2 for 4 with a pair of homers and three RBI as the Cougars (19-2, 5-0), ranked No. 1 in the IE and No. 4 in So Cal, took care of the Mustangs (8-13, 1-5), ranked No. 11 in the IE.

King of Riverside 10, Centennial of Corona 9: Alyssa Barela delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to help the Wolves (18-4, 6-1), ranked No. 6 in the IE, pull out the walk-off win over the Huskies (11-7, 2-3), ranked No. 17 in the IE.

Santiago of Corona 5, Corona 2: Oregon-commit Hanna Delgado went 2 for 4 with a homer, UAB-bound Sierra Frazier went 2 for 4, UCLA-commit Stella Bennett went 2 for 4 and Oregon State-commit Shelby Macias picked up the win for the Sharks (14-12, 2-3), ranked No. 10 in the IE.


In the Citrus Belt League:


Yucaipa 7, Carter of Rialto 6: Esperanza Coe allowed five hits, two earned runs and struck out seven and she went 3 for 4 and Kaylie Michaels and Hailey Erickson drove in two runs apiece to help the Thunderbirds (17-6, 7-1), ranked No. 8 in the IE, hold off the Lions (8-10, 2-7).

Redlands 3, Redlands East Valley 2: Makayla Leyvas singled to center field and Lexi Torres scored on an E-8 to give the Terriers (12-11, 5-3) the walk-off win over the Wildcats (14-6, 6-1), ranked No. 7 in the IE, in the bottom of the eighth.


In the City-Eastern League:


Our Lady of Peace of San Diego 7, Christian of El Cajon 4: Solana Martinez went 3 for 4 with a triple, a run and three RBI to lead the Pilots (9-8, 2-2) past the Patriots (10-9, 1-3).

Clairemont of San Diego 4, Serra of San Diego 0: San Diego Christian College-bound Maddy Jacobs went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI and she threw a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts for the Chieftains (13-3, 4-0), ranked No. 7 in San Diego.


In the City-Western League:


Cathedral Catholic of San Diego 8, University City of San Diego 1: UCLA-bound Megan Fariamo and USD-commit Sara Rusconi bot hit solo homers and Faraimo threw five scoreless and hitless innings with 13 strikeouts to lift the Dons (16-3, 3-0), ranked No. 1 in San Diego and No. 1 in So Cal.


In the East Valley League:


Poly of Sun Valley 11, Arleta 1: Vivian Little pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and she went 3 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI, Ruby Melendez went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, Rebecca Gardea went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI for the Parrots (18-4, 7-1).


In the Grossmont Hills League:


Granite Hills of El Cajon 6, Santana of Santee 5: M Boehm and B Bertussi had a pair of two-run singles in the bottom of the sixth to help the Eagles (12-6, 3-0), ranked No. 10 in San Diego, rally past the Sultans (17-4, 3-1), ranked No. 8 in San Diego, to take sole possessionof first place in league.

Grossmont of El Cajon 9, West Hills of Santee 1: Jordan Brown went 4 for 4 with a homer, three runs and two RBI, Candace Henderson doubled and drove in four runs and Kati Contreras homered and drove in three runs for the Foothillers (16-7, 1-2), ranked No. 16 in San Diego.


In the Grossmont Valley League:


El Capitan of Lakeside 14, El Cajon Valley 0: Madison Rosalis went 4 for 4 with a run and three RBI for the Vaqueros (9-5-1, 2-1).


In the Imperial Valley League:

In the Pacific View League:


Rio Mesa of Oxnard 17, Channel Islands of Oxnard 0: Utah-commit Alicia Estrada tossed a perfect game with 14 Ks in five innings, Kianna Abellera went 3 for 4 with two triples and six RBI, Kortney Kemper went 4 for 4 with two triples and four RBI, Siena College-bound Sabrina Vargas went 4 for 4 with four runs, Madison Samora went went 3 for 4 with four runs and Alexa Martinez went 2 for 3 with two doubles for the Spartans (17-6, 8-0), ranked No. 5 in LA and No. 16 in So Cal.

West Torrance 14, Leuzinger of Lawndale 0: Camille Nolte tossed a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts in five innings and Hailey Cowing went 3 for 3 with a double, three runs and three RBI for the Warriors (21-2, 3-0), ranked No. 6 in LA and No. 18 in So Cal.

North Torrance 13, Torrance 6: Cal State Stanislaus-bound Kyndra Marzorini went 3 for 5 with a run and two RBI, Marissa Garza went 3 for 5 with two runs and an RBI and the Saxons (16-9, 2-1), ranked No. 14 in LA, used a five-run rally in the top of the sevent to pull away for the victory.

Chatsworth 10, Granada Hills Charter 4: Amber Toven went 2 for 5 with a double, a run and four RBI, Ruby Salzman went 2 for 3 with two triples, two runs and two RBI, Amanda Clack went 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI and Ava Justman went 3 for 3 with two runs as the Chancellors (16-5, 7-0) knocked off the Highlanders (11-11-1, 4-4).


In nonleague games:


Huntington Beach 7, Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista 0: Morgan MacBeath and Missouri-commit Grace Uribe combined on a shutout, North Carolina State-commit Devyn Greer had three hits and Oregon-bound Allee Bunker, USD-bound Kelli Kufta and Illinois-commit Keely Ryono all had RBI for the Oilers (14-6), ranked No. 4 in the OC and No. 11 in So Cal, in the win over the Crusaders (12-8), ranked No. 4 in San Diego. UCLA-commit Lexi Sosa didn’t pitch for Mater Dei Catholic.

Valencia of Magic Mountain 11, Kennedy of Granada Hills 1: Texas-bound Shea O’Leary allowed two hits, no earned runs and K’d eight, Tennessee-bound Ally Shipman wen 2 for 3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI and Emma Bramson went 3 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBI for the Vikings (18-7), ranked No. 4 in LA and No. 15 in So Cal.

Central of El Centro 8, High Tech of San Diego 5: Janyssa Martin connected on a two-run homer, Annika Garcia had an RBI single and the Spartans (15-6) added an unearned run during a four-run rally in the top of the seventh to pull out the victory over the Storm (6-10).
