The So Cal Roundup for Tuesday, April 24.

Behind the flawless defense and superb pitching, Olympian of Chula Vista, ranked No. 20 in San Diego by So Cal Sidelines, picked up a 5-0 Metro Mesa League win over Otay Ranch of Chula Vista on Tuesday at Otay Ranch High.

Pitching-wise for the Eagles, Utah-bound Sydney Sandez went the distance, shutting down the Mustangs one by one as she tossed a no-hitter, while walking two and striking out nine. Her performance was given a boost when the offense was able to score early.

Olympian scored a couple runs in the top of the first inning starting with a double by Stephanie Alvarez that scored Mia Silva, who had three hits. Alvarez would later come in to score to make it 2-0.

The Eagles tacked on another run to extend their lead 3-0 when Vicky Valdez laced a single that brought Aimee Alvarado around to score from second base.

Another run for the Eagles came in the top of the fourth as Bella Hurtado led off with a single and with two outs came around to score on a base hit by Silva to make it 4-0.

Olympian, with a nice lead, added its final run in the top of the seventh as Sarah Gross, who went 1 for 3 and had two RBI, knocked in Silva on a sacrifice fly to center field.

For the Mustangs in the loss, Gisselle Garcia went five innings, giving up four runs of which two were earned on seven hits while walking two and striking out two. In relief, Ashley Medina gave up one hit in two innings of work and allowed a run, which was earned while walking two and striking out one.

With the win, the Eagles have now won five in a row and are tied for first place in the Metro Mesa League after Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista beat Bonita Vista of Chula Vista.

“It will definitely be a game on Thursday and I believe if we play like we have of late with the offense coming through and the defense plays well, I expect to win,” said Eagles coach Mike Gross when asked about the big game on Thursday against the Crusaders, whom they beat, 4-2, on April 10.
