Softball: So Cal Roundup (4/25/18) Sharks Circling in Big VIII Once Again

Santiago saw one of its star players, Florida-bound 3B Brittany Allen, quit the team during a five-game losing streak that started at the Michelle Carew Classic and spilled into Big VIII League play, but the Sharks have pulled it together, avenging one of their league losses with a 5-0 victory over King of Riverside on Wednesday at King High.

It was the third straight Big VIII win for Santiago, ranked No. 9 in the IE by So Cal Sidelines, which improved to 15-11 overall and 3-3 in league for third place. The Wolves, ranked No. 5 in the IE and No. 19 in So Cal, dropped to 18-5 and 6-2, but retained second place.

“Staying together,” Sharks coach Brittney Gossett said of her team’s resilience. “Our goal is focusing on what we can control and ignoring the uncontrollabe. We are playing for each other.”

Oregon State-commit Shelby Macias tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts, UAB-bound Sierra Frazier went 2 for 3 with a two-run shot, Oregon-commit Hanna Delgado went 1 for 3 with a triple and Princeton-bound Madison Hamilton went 1 for 4 with an RBI to power the Sharks in the win over the Wolves.


In the Avocado-West League:


Carlsbad 15, Sage Creek of Carlsbad 3: Laurel Moody went 3 for 5 with a run and five RBI and Marisa Hensch homered to lift the Lancers (9-4-1, 4-0), ranked No. 14 in San Diego.


In the Baseline League:


Etiwanda 11, Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga 2: Ottawa University-bound Jada Cruz went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBI and Madisyn Estorga went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBI for the Eagles (18-5, 3-2), ranked No. 6 in the IE.

Chino Hills 7, St. Lucy’s of Glendora 2: Camryn Lyman went 2 for 4 with two RBI, Makena Brocki went 2 for 3 with two runs, Kayleen Schneider went 1 for 3 with two RBI and Maryland-commit Kendall Mangel threw a six-hitter with three strikeouts for the Huskies (23-4, 6-0), ranked No. 2 in the IE and No. 9 in So Cal.

Rancho Cucamonga 9, Upland 8: Lexi Alaniz drove in Kassidi Hernandez with a two-out single in the top of the eighth and the Cougars (11-7, 2-4) held on to pull out the upset over the Scots (13-6-1, 3-3), ranked No. 7 in the IE.


In the Bay League:


Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach 6, Redondo Union 1: Katie Katsuyama pitched a four-hitter with three strikeouts and Washington University St. Louis-bound Katie Gould went 1 for 4 with tworuns and two RBI for the Mustangs (14-9-1, 4-0), ranked No. 19 in LA.

Palos Verdes 5, Peninsula of Rolling Hills Estates 3: Brooke Steibel went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBI for the Sea Kings (9-8, 4-1).


In the Big VIII League:


Norco 16, Corona 1: Washington-commit Sarah Willis went 5 for 6 with a monster three-run shot and five RBI to lead the Cougars (20-3, 6-0), ranked No. 1 in the IE and No. 6 in So Cal.

Roosevelt of Eastvale 10, Centennial of Corona 8: Long Beach State-bound Maddy Ruffin and College of Charleston-bound Jenna Helberg homered and Florida Gulf Coast-bound McKenna Batterton went 3 for 3 as the Mustangs (9-13, 2-5), ranked No. 11 in the IE, outslugged the Huskies (11-8, 2-4).


In the Citrus Belt League:


Redlands East Valley 7, AB Miller of Fontana 1: Cal Baptist-bound Shelby Arbeiter went 1 for 3 with a triple and three RBI, Eve Harvey went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI and Boise State-commit Autumn Bennett went 2 for 4 with two doubles and a run for the Wildcats (15-6, 7-1), ranked No. 10 in the IE.

Yucapia 3, Cajon of San Bernardino 1: Stanford-commit Sydnee Huff had a two-run blast and Esperanza Coe tossed a three-hitter withfive strikeouts for the Thunderbirds (18-6, 8-1), ranked No. 8 in the IE.

Redlands 10, Eisenhower of Rialto 0: Nehri Tath-Slezak tossed a no-hitter with one walk and 15 strikeouts and went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Lexi Torres went 2 for 3 with a homer and four RBI for the Terriers (14-11, 7-3), ranked No. 16 in the IE.


In the City-Eastern League:


Christian of El Cajon 7, Mira Mesa of San Diego 6: Washington-bound Silent Rain Espinoza, who went 3 for 4 with four RBI, delivered a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to give the Patriots (11-9, 2-3) a victory over the Marauders (11-7-1, 2-3).


In the City-Western League:


Scripps Ranch of San Diego 10, Point Loma of San Diego 0: Austin Peay-bound Lexi Osowski went 2 for 3 with a run and three RBI and San Diego State-commit Alyssa Vilke went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI for the Falcons (11-8, 3-2), ranked No. 15 in San Diego.


In the East Valley League:


Poly of Sun Valley 4, Chavez of San Fernando 0: Vivian Little tossed a one-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts and Natalie Topete went 2 for 4 with two RBI to help the Parrots (20-6, 9-1) avenge their lone league loss with a victory over the Eagles (11-16, 8-2) to give them sole possession of first place in league.


In the Grossmont Hills League:


Granite Hills of El Cajon 9, Grossmont of El Cajon 7: Amaya Esparza hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh and the Eagles (15-6, 4-0), ranked No. 4 in San Diego, held on despite a big rally in the bottom of the sevent to beat the Foothillers (19-8, 1-3), ranked No. 10 in San Diego.

West Hills of Santee 5, Steele Canyon of Spring Valley 1: Alyssa Bubar went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, a run and three RBI, Haley Valles went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three runs and Pacific University Oregon-bound Carly Bursch pitched a four-hitter with six walks and nine strikeouts as the Wolf Pack (8-8, 1-3) upset the Cougars (15-8, 1-3), ranked No. 16 in San Diego.


In the Grossmont Valley League:


Valhalla of El Cajon 9, Helix of La Mesa 6: Emily Quesada had an RBI single, Jade Hill and Victoria Villegas had two-run singles and Delaney Stettler had an RBI single during a six-run rally in the top of the seventh as the Norsemen (9-10, 5-0) beat the Scotties (11-11, 3-2) to take sole possession of first place in league.

El Capitan of Lakeside 17, Monte Vista of Spring Valley 6: Katy Hicks went 3 for 4 with two runs and three RBI and Bailey Olaveson went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBI for the Vaqueros (10-6-1, 3-1).


In the Mountain Pass League:


Beaumont 11, San Jacinto 6: Aubrey Slider went 2 for 4 with two bombs and six RBI, Northwestern Oklahoma State-commit Joey Casey went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a homer, two runs and three RBI as the Cougars (13-7, 5-0), ranked No. 18 in the IE, defeated the Tigers (11-9, 2-3).


In the Orange Coast League:


Godinez of Santa Ana 16, Costa Mesa 0: Airilin Ramirez tossed a two-hitter with sevenKs in five innings and went 3 for 4 with three RBI, Sami Villanueva went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI, Iyari Ramirez went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBI and UCLA-commit Savannah Pola went 3 for 4 with a homer for the Grizzlies (14-4, 5-0).


In the Pioneer League:


North Torrance 6, South Torrance 2: Cal State Stanislaus-bound Kyndra Marzorini threw a two-hitter with two walks and 14 strikeouts, Bella Gonzalez went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBI, Marissa Garza went went 2 for 3 with three RBI and HaHaylee Hsieh went 2 for 3 with two runs as the Saxons (17-9, 3-1), ranked No. 20 in LA, knocked off the Spartans (17-6, 2-2), ranked No. 10 in LA.

The win sets up a showdown between North and crosstown-rival West Torrance (22-2, 4-0), ranked No. 6 in LA and No. 17 in So Cal, on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at North High. West won the first meeting, 5-3, on April 11.

“They got us at their place,” Saxons coach Howard Miller said, “so we’re hoping to return the favor, but it’ll be tough.”


In the San Andreas League:


Jurupa Hills of Fontana vs. Arroyo Valley of San Bernardino


In the Sunkist League:


Grand Terrace 10, Kaiser of Fontana 0: Oklahoma-commit Alycia Flores had a two-run bomb and three-run double and Nikki Barboza had a three-run blast for the Titans (10-9, 5-0), ranked No. 14 in the IE.


In the Trinity League:


Orange Lutheran 6, Santa Margarita 1: LSU-commit Ciara Briggs went 2 for 3 with a double, a bomb, two runs and two RBI, Ohio State-commit Mya Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a rn and an RBI, Dartmouth-bound Kira La Scola went 2 for 4 with three RBI, Dartmouth-commit Mia Bagatourian earned her 12th win and BYU-commit Taryn Lennon picked up the save for the Lancers (22-3, 3-1), ranked No. 2 in the OC and No. 5 in So Cal, in the win over the Eagles (19-3, 2-2), ranked No. 7 in the OC and No. 20 in So Cal.


In the Valley Mission League:

In the West Valley League:


Chatsworth 4, El Camino Real of Woodland Hills 1: Ava Justman threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts and hit a solobomb to help the Chancellors (17-5, 8-0) beat the Conquistadores (13-11, 7-2).

Granada Hills Charter 5, Cleveland of Reseda 3: Rachel Jardim’s three-run blast during a four-run rally in the bottom of the fourth propelled the Highlanders (13-12-1, 5-4) past the Cavs (12-8, 4-5).


In the Suzanne Manlet Tournament:


Rio Mesa of Oxnard 12, Foothill Tech of Ventura 0: Utah-commit Alicia Estrada tossed a five-hit shutout with nine strikeouts, Madison Samora went 2 for 2 with four RBI and Alyssa Madrid went 2 for 3 with three RBI for the Spartans (19-6), ranked No. 5 in LA and No. 16 in So Cal.


In nonleague games:


Clairemont of San Diego 1, Imperial 0: San Diego Christian College-bound Maddy Jacobs tossed a two-hitter with one walk and 12 strikeouts and Kianna Knoll doubled in Erika Anders with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Chieftains (14-3), ranked No. 6 in San Diego, a walk-off win over the Tigers (9-10-1).
