Softball: So Cal Roundup (4/9/18) Mariners Attack Sharks

The So Cal Roundup for Monday, April 9.

After going 3-2 at last week’s Michelle Carew Classic, Pacifica of Garden Grove picked up a 5-1 win over Santiago of Corona in a nonleague makeup game on Monday at Santiago High.

Oregon-commit Alyssa Brito and Jacquelyn Bickar connected on home runs and Lilyanna Martinez had two hits to lead the offense for the Mariners (12-6), ranked No. 5 in the OC by So Cal Sidelines, in the victory over the Sharks (11-8), ranked No. 7 in the IE and No. 20 in So Cal.

“It was a good team win all the way around offense and defense against a really great team,” Brito said. “Great timing going into league. We just have to keep the momentum through league play.”

Senior Eliza Sandoval didn’t allow an earned run in five innngs to get the win and Colorado State-commit Julia Cabral threw two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the save for Pacifica, which opens Empire League play at Valencia of Placentia on Tuesday.

“Overall, we played very well today,” Sandoval said. “Our defense had very few errors and played a lot smarter with the ball. We definitely stepped up at the plate and jumped on their pitchers early in the game.”

Santiago is at Centennial of Corona, ranked No. 17 in the IE, in Big VIII League play on Wednesday.

In other nonleague games:

Clairemont of San Diego 3, Point Loma of San Diego 2: Jenee Broduer went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI and Ari Salazar, Erika Anders, San Diego Christian College-bound Maddy Jacobs and Samantha Jameson had two hits apiece to lead the Chieftains (9-2), ranked No. 5 in San Diego.

Mission Hills of San Marcos 11, Grossmont of El Cajon 1: Washington-bound Ari Quinones went 3 for4 with a double, a triple, two runs and an RBI, Malama Unutoa went 2 for 2 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI, Catie Villalobos went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs and three RBI and Abrianna Schwartz went 2 for 2 with a run and two RBI as the Grizzlies (10-5), ranked No. 10 in San Diego, knocked off the Foothillers (12-5), ranked No. 16 in San Diego.

JSerra of San Juan Capistrano 8, Crean Lutheran of Irvine 4: Sarah Shaw struck out seven to get the win, Ali Steinker went 2-4 with a double and an RBI and Caitlin Lewis, Jaelyn Anderson and Grace Currie each had an RBI for the Lions (8-8).

In the Falcon Fiesta Tournament:

Rancho Buena Vista of Vista 7, Rancho Bernardo of San Diego 0: Arizona-commit Farrah Steffany pitched a six-hit shutout with three walks and five strikeouts, Dani Ellis went 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI, Shealee Perkins went 4 for 5 with a double and two runs, Laeni Terrones went 3 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI, Monica Padilla went 2 for 3 with a double, a run and an RBI and Cadee Herrmann went 3 for 4 with a run as the Longhorns (6-5) knocked off the Broncos (6-8).

Escondido 8, Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista 0: The Cougars (10-5) knocked off the Crusaders (9-6), ranked No. 6 in San Diego. UCLA-commit Lexi Sosa didn’t pitch for Mater Dei Catholic.

In the Empire League:

Kennedy of La Palma 15, Western of Anaheim 0
