The So Cal Roundup for Tuesday, May 1.

UCLA-commit Lexi Sosa of Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista is known as one of the top pitchers in So Cal, but she happens to be a dangerous hitter as well.

Eastlake of Chula Vista made the mistake walking UCLA-commit Alyssa Garcia to load the bases for Sosa in the top of the sixth and Sosa made the Titans pay with a bases-clearing double to help the Crusaders pull out an 8-7 win in a Metro Mesa League game on Tuesday at Eastlake High.

“It was a definitely a crazy game today against Eastlake,” Sosa said. “I believe there were two outs, I was on deck and they purposely walked Alyssa Garcia, causing the bases to be loaded. As I went to the box, I just took a deep breath, relaxed and just focused on hitting the ball.

“(Oregon State-committed pitcher) Sierra (Tufts), whose doing wonderful things at Eastlake, is very consistent with working the corners and having that occasional change or rise. So I really just wanted to stay ahead in the count, but also make good decisions and stay disciplined. The first pitch, she threw me a screwball for a strike. Then she went low and out for a ball. After that, she went back inside for a screw, and that’s when I drove the ball to the left-center gap.”

The victory keeps Mater Dei Catholic (15-9, 6-1), ranked No. 7 in San Diego, tied for first place in the Metro Mesa League with Bonita Vista of Chula Vista (13-7-2, 6-1). The Crusaders beat the Barons, 7-5, on April 24 and close out the regular season at Bonita Vista on May 10.
