Softball: So Cal Sidelines Players of the Week (3/26/18)

Chino Hills has had plenty of hitting in recent years, but this season the Huskies also have pitching with the arrival of Maryland-committed freshman Kendall Mangel.

The Corona Angels product had a huge week, going 5-0 with a 1.87 ERA to help the Huskies knock off Beaumont, 9-5, Grand Terrace, 10-2, Santiago of Corona, 5-4 (in eight innings), valley View of Moreno Valley, 9-8 (in nine innings), and Upland, 6-3, to capture the Redlands Invitational title.

Mangel was named tournament MVP and she also picked up So Cal Player of the Week honors from So Cal Sidlelines.

“Kendall is an amazing spirit and always has high energy on and off the field,” Chino Hills 1B/P Brooke Johnson said. “Her positive attitude inspires us to work hard behind her whether it is on defense or at the plate. She is an incredible pitcher and I look forward to seeing all that she accomplishes this year and the rest of her softball career.”

Most memorable moment of your athletic career? Being down to our last strike for a berth to PGF Nationals, we rallied and won the game!

What was the funniest thing you have ever seen on the field? Choreographing our pregame dances for the Huskies.

Who is the most underrated player on your team? (Junior C) Maddie Barnes. She comes to compete every day and has a great attitude.

UAB-bound catcher Sierra Frazier went 7 for 15 with 10 RBI and threw out seven base runners trying to steal to help Santiago of Corona go 4-1 and take third place at the Redlands Invitational. The Sharks had victories over Grand Terrace, 10-2, Beaumont, 9-0, Redlands of East Valley, 8-5, and Vista Murrieta, 9-8, and aloss to Chino Hills, 5-4 (in eight innings), last week.

Long Island-bound Samantha Garcia went 5 for 9 with a double, three home runs, four runs and five RBI for St. Lucy’s of Glendora in a nonleague loss to Los Altos of Hacienda Heights and wins over Long Beach Wilson, 8-2, and Fullerton, 12-4, at the Savanna Tournament. Garcia batting .500 with four doubles, five homers and 12 RBI for the season.

Tennessee Chattanooga-bound Mariah Ramirez went 3-0 with one shutout and 28 strikeouts in 18 innings and she went 6 for 8 with a double, a triple, a homer and seven RBI to lead Sunny Hills of Fullerton to a nonleague victory over Irvine, 5-1, and wins over Pomona Catholic, 4-0, and San Juan Hills of San Juan Capistrano, 9-2, at the Savanna Tournament.

St. Joseph’s College-bound Ashleigh Hartwig went 7 for 11 with three home runs, five runs and 12 RBI for West Hills of Santee last week. Hartwig went 4 for 5 with three home runsand 10 RBI as the Wolf Pack tied a CIF-SDS record with eight home runs in a 27-1 win over Montgomery of San Diego in the Hilltop Tournament on Saturday. Hartwig is batting .609 with four homers and 20 RBI on the season.
