Softball: Corona Angels Win Defacto So Cal A’s Invitational Title (6/17/18)

Once again, the So Cal A’s Invitational was unable to crown a champion because a number of the teams had to catch flights back home or pulled out of the tournament after the quarterfinals.

Corona Angels-Tyson and Georgia Impact-Lewis were the last teams left standing, so their showdown in the semifinals turned into the defacto championship on Sunday afternoon at Harvard Park in Irvine.

UCLA-commit Savannah Pola reached on an error to lead off the top of the sixth. Pola advanced to second on Cal-bound Amani Bradley’s ground out, advanced to third on Washington-bound Madi Huskey’s ground out and scored on Washington-commit Sarah Willis’ single to center field to give the Corona Angels a 1-0 lead.

Michigan State-commit Sarah Ladd started for the Angels and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings allowing two hits and striking out one. UCLA-bound Megan Faraimo threw 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits and striking out seven to pick up the victory for Corona.

Penn State-commit Vanessa Oatley turned in an outstanding effort in defeat, allowing four hits, no earned runs and striking out three for the Impact.


In the quarterfinals:


Georgia Impact-Lewis 4, So Cal Athletics-Richardson 1: Alabama-bound Skylar Wallace went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI, South Carolina-bound Karly Heath went 1 for 3 with an RBI and Auburn-bound Kelley Lynch went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Florida State-commit Julia Cottrill doubled and scored a run and Virginia Tech-commit Kelsey Bennett doubled an drove in a run to help the Impact knock off the So Cal A’s.

Corona Angels-Tyson 5, Explosion-Denio/Jackson 1: Savannah Pola went 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI, Willis went 1 for 2 with a double, a run and an RBI, Fresno State-bound McKenzie Wilson went 1 for 2 with two runs and Duke-commit Gisele Tapia went 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI to lead the Corona Angels past the Explosion.

PA Chaos 5, Beverly Bandits-Conroy 4: Brown-bound Elayna Tsiouplis (1 for 2, two runs) scored on an error and James Madison-commit Morgan Mesaros drove in Drexel-commit Lindsey Hunt (2 for 3, two doubles, two runs) with a ground out to second as the Chaos rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth to rally past the Bandits. Fairfield-bound Kaitlin Hoffman went 2 for 3 with a triple, a run and two RBI for Chaos.

In first-round games:


So Cal Athletics-Richardson 10, So Cal Choppers 0: Arizona State-commit Jazmine Hill went 2 for 3 with a double, a run and two RBI, Stanford-commit Sydney Steele went 2 for 3 with a triple, two runs and two RBI, Notre Dame-commit Miranda Johnson went 2 for 2 with a triple, two runs and two RBI and North Dakota Sate-bound Paige Vargas and Devyn Netz combined on a two-hit shutout for the So Cal A’s.

Georgia Impact-Lewis 9, Cal Cruisers-Sievers 1: Heath, the Gatorade State Player of the Year from South Carolina, homered and drove in four runs and Lynch, the Gatorage State Player of the Year from Georgia, threw threw scoreless and hitless innings with one strikeout to get the victory for Georgia Impact.

Explosion-Denio/Jackson 2, Lady Lightning Gold-Corn 1: Florida-bound Brittany Allen connected one a two-run blast to right field in the top of the sixth to help the Explosion pull out the victory over LLG.

Corona Angels-Tyson 2, Birmingham Thunderbolts Premier 0: Faraimo, the Gatorade National Player of the Year, tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikouts to record the shutout for the Corona Angels.

PA Chaos 1, Texas Glory-Shelton 0: With a runner on third base, the Glory intentionally walked two batters to load the bases for Hunt, who delivered a walk-off single to get the Chaos into the quarterfinals.

Beverly Bandits-Conroy 9, DeMarini Aces 5: Washington-bound Francesca Torraca drove in three runs and stole a base, Loyola-bound Madison Ebeling went 2 for 2 three runs, two stolen bases and two RBI and James Madison-bound Hallie Hall went 2 for 3 with two RBI to lift the Bandits.

OC Batbusters-Stith 9, Firecrackers-Rico/Weil 0: UCLA-commit Maya Brady belted a grand slam to help the Batbusters run away from the Firecrackers.

Jersey Intensity-KOD 6, Irvine Sting 1: Missouri-commit Joley Mitchell connected on two homers, giving her four home runs for the weekend, to lead the Intensity past the Sting.
