The PGF Nationals were officially on even before the opening ceremonies even started on Monday at Huntington Beach Sports Complex.

Three of the top contenders got knocked into the loser’s bracket on Day 1.

DePaul-bound Nicole Cuchran had an RBI double, Loyola-bound Madison Ebeling and Purdue-bound Rylee Platusic belted solo homers and Northwestern-commit Sydney Supple threw a complete game to help Beverly Bandits-Conroy, the defending PGF 18U Premier national champions, knock off OC Batbusters-Stith.

“I mean, it was a tough battle,” Supple said. “We knew the Batbusters were always going to bring their A game and we definitely brought our A game and brought it rightback to them. We knew it was going to be a close game and we obviously wanted to be the ones that came out on top. We executed perfectly today from the defense to the offense. I thought all of our girls had tons of heart. We just gave this game all that we had.”

Explosion-Denio/Jackson rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth and won on McKenzie Barbara’s walk-off three-run bomb to take down So Cal Athletics-Richardson, 5-4.

Arizona-bound Marissa Schuld, the two-time FloSoftball National Player of the Year, used her riseball to shut down East Cobb Bullet-Schnute’s explosive offense and lead the Oro Valley Suncats to a 3-1 victory over the WFC champions.
