In one of the more bizarre games of the day because it had to be stopped twice due to a funeral procession and on the second stoppage the game had to be played under silent rules meaning no cheering by the crowd, San Marcos emerged victorious with a 3-2 nonleague win over Norco on Saturday morning at John Banks Sports Complex in Pala.

Despite the starange conditions, the Knights were able to rally late in the bottom of the fifth behind Utah State-bound Lexi Orozco, who lined double to right field scoring both Cental Florida-bound Tera Testa and Rachael Baer, who came into run for Maddie Helms, who went 2 for 3, to make give San Marcos (18-2), ranked No. 2 in San Diego and No. 6 in So Cal by So Cal Sidelines, the edge.

Early on it looked like the game would go into extra innings as both Washington-commit Sarah Willis of Norco and Notre Dame-bound Payton Tidd of San Marcos were on and just mowing the competition down.

However, in the top of the fourth the Cougars (19-3), ranked No. 1 in the IE and No. 4 in So Cal, finally got something going with two outs as Army-bound Bianca Gonzalez took the 1-2 count offering from Tidd and hammered it over the left field fence to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. It was her first home run on the season.

San Marcos didn’t get another opportunity to do anything till the bottom of the sixth when Testa laced a single to score Gracey Occhionero, who came in to run for Longwood-bound Madi Blair, to bring the Knights within 2-1.

Taking the loss for the Cougars, Willis went six innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits while walking zero and striking out four.

On the other side for the Knights, Tidd went 7 innings giving up two earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out eight on the day.

The last time these two teams met, the Cougars beat the Knights, 2-1, at the Dave Kopps Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, AZ.

The loss by Norco snapped the Cougars’ five-game winning streak. while the win gives the Knights their 10th in a row with their last loss coming over a month ago.
